MATE was established in March 2000 in response to a local need for a high quality community theatre company, led by professionals, that would provide a training ground and exciting opportunities for both aspiring professional performers, and for community performers who had chosen to pursue other career paths (or made other life choices) but retained a passion for the arts.
MATE has a reputation for staging exciting high quality productions in a wide range of genres; from physical storytelling to multi-media productions, new music theatre to adaptations of classic texts, social drama to site-specific work, promenade and spectacular outdoor theatre. The company performs regularly in theatres, arts and cultural venues, parks, schools and community venues, festivals and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The company has also developed innovative and exciting work with a wide range of creative partners; you can read about some of our exciting partnership projects on our partnerships page.
There are many exciting volunteer opportunities within MATE Productions and Shakespeare North. Volunteers regularly give their time to support us by helping out with fundraising activities, with design, making costume, props and set, stage management, front of house and behind the scenes. MATE could not thrive or survive without this invaluable and much needed support from its members and supporters – many thanks!
