MATE Productions is a community arts organisation based in Knowsley, Merseyside – you can find us at Cockpit House, 34 Church Street, Prescot, L34 3LA. MATE Productions was originally established as Merseyside Arts Theatre and Education in March 2000 and is led by Artistic Director Gaynor La Rocca and a team of professional practitioners.  The company is leading the community engagement programme for the Shakespeare North Trust who are building a commemorative Shakespearian theatre in the heart of Prescot’s historic town centre –

MATE uses the mediums of theatre, storytelling, music, dance and media to engage with communities and young people across Merseyside and has a reputation for large-scale community engagement, spectacular site-specific and outdoor work (see our partnerships page) and for staging high quality productions in a wide range of genres.

MATE creates exciting performance work for theatre spaces, arts and cultural venues, woodlands and parks, canals and docklands, museums, libraries and great halls, nursing homes, pubs and social clubs, schools and other community venues, and regularly stages shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Successful Opening Weekend for As You Like It

MATE’s touring production of As You Like It opened in Prescot this weekend and went down very well with the audience, some proclaiming that MATE’s production was ‘the best they had ever seen’!

The Musicians at Prescot Community Church

Following the success of sell out shows at Unity Theatre in March, MATE Productions’ Young Actors will be taking Patrick Marber’s The Musicians to the Lowry Theatre in Manchester this May.

In partnership with National Theatre Connections,  the Young Actors will continue their success when they perform at the National Theatre Connections Regional Festival.  The production will run on Saturday 14th May.

But before this, they will also be performing the hilarious production at the Prescot Community Church on the 13th of May.

After such success at the Unity, MATE Productions Young Actors are looking forward to performing The Musicians in Prescot and Manchester.

A Potted Prescot Tour Begins

Our schools team has begun touring Knowsley primary schools this week with our ‘Hilarious Histories: A Potted Prescot’ play.  After a roaring success last year, the team are excited to be educating even more children about the important history of Prescot, now including a special section on The Prescot School.

Success for MATE Productions' Young Talent

We are proud to announce that our two leads in our summer show ‘As You Like It’ have successful auditioned to become a part of the prestigious  National Youth Theatre.  As you like it rosalind orlandoThey will train with the company in London for three weeks in August, after our ‘As You Like It’ tour has ended.  They will then be official members of the National Youth Theatre with lots of exciting and unique opportunities in store, until they turn twenty four.   Congratulations Ewan and Robyn!

Potted Prescot

12553068_10153315363354212_7629581250140857022_nComedy meets history in MATE Productions’ new creation Hilarious Histories: A Potted Prescot.  Commissioned by Knowsley ARK and Prescot Townscape Heritage Initiative, MATE brought the archives of Kirkby Library alive, giving children a taste of Prescot’s rich history. After a successful first run, A Potted Prescot will be touring primary schools across Knowsley, in partnership with Knowsley Park High School as it celebrates its re-launch as The Prescot School, in April 2016.

Creative workshops focus upon building drama and performance skills, confidence and social skills through improvisation, scripts, drama games, arts & crafts, singing & fun!

Starting Thursday 24th September – £5 per session.

Arts Awards for 11- 25’s year olds at MATE Productions

Aged 11 – 25 and passionate about the arts? Do you love acting, dancing, singing, composing music, playing an instrument, stage management, directing, helping out backstage, learning about being an arts administrator, theatre design, making costumes or set and props, or maybe you like making short films?

MATE Productions will be offering young people the opportunity to achieve Arts Awards bronze, silver and gold (level 1-3) leadership qualifications at Cockpit House; Shakespeare North’s community arts base in Prescot, Knowsley. All the World's A Stage in Prescot

To support Shakespeare North’s bid for a new Shakespearian theatre in the heart of historic Prescot, and to mark Shakespeare’s 400th birthday in a very special way, the townsfolk of Prescot are showing everyone, through the words of the bard himself, that ‘All the World’s a Stage’ in Prescot.

Along with celebrating the approval of plans for Shakespeare North’s new theatre, and the Bard’s birthday, the community film also launches the company’s summer production of ‘As You Like It’, in partnership with Shakespeare North and The RSC Open Stages programme.
The Quest for the Golden Egg

gooseMother Goose’s Quest is finally over and she has been reunited with her golden egg thanks to the help of the White Rabbit, Jack and Jill and the people of Prescot.

This EGGcellent, adventurous interactive quest was a success and it was lovely to see a turnout of over 300 people over the two weekends.

'As You Like It' in the woods for Shakespeare 400th Anniversary


As part of a year of global celebrations for Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary in 2016, MATE Productions in partnership with Shakespeare North and the RSC Open Stages programme will stage ‘As You Like It’ in their stunning Prescot woodland before touring to outdoor venues throughout Merseyside and then to RSC in Stratford Upon Avon.  With an exciting cast, rehearsals have now begun!  Read more…

Volunteering opportunities at MATE Productions and Shakespeare North

MATE Productions are running a series of open door evenings where local people of all ages, backgrounds and experience can find out how they might get involved with MATE Productions and Shakespeare North, and sign up to areas of interest – as a performer (acting, dancing, singing, playing an instrument) or behind the scenes, helping out with stewarding or front of house, admin or marketing, sewing, making costumes, props or building or painting sets. MATE Productions to lead community engagement for Shakespeare North

MATE Productions are now based in Cockpit House in Prescot – the new community arts base for the Shakespeare North Trust who are working with Knowsley MBC to build a £15 million commemorative Shakespearian Theatre in the heart of Prescot’s historic town centre. MATE have been asked to lead on the development of a 5 year programme of community engagement engaging local people with exciting arts and cultural activity and opportunities.
